The United Nations is marking 2021 as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables, spotlighting their vital role in human nutrition and food security, as well as urging efforts to improve sustainable production and reduce waste.

In a message launching the campaign, Secretary-General António Guterres said “Fruits and vegetables are the cornerstone of a healthy and varied diet. They provide the human body with an abundance of nutrients, strengthen immune systems and help lower risks for a number of diseases.” However, despite these tremendous benefits, “we do not consume enough of them” he added.

A simple way to consume more is to fill half of your plate with vegetables and fruit at each meal, as recommended by Canada’s Food Guide. You can vary the colors, textures and shapes. You can choose them cooked or raw, fresh, frozen or canned.

If you are looking for inspiration, on our website you can find more than 400 recipes with vegetables as main ingredient and 150 with fruits.
